The Ascension 2022 Team

image of Chimira Andres
Chimira Andres completed her HBSc in Integrated Science (iSci) at McMaster University and recently finished her MSc studying Planetary Sciences & Geophysics at the University of Western Ontario. Her research focuses on (peri)glacial Arctic environments, satellite mission planning, Mars-icy planet analogues, and remote sensing. Chimira is a strong advocate for interdisciplinary and experiential learning in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) as well as science communication. Chimira is currently working at the European Space Agency (ESA) as a Young Graduate Trainee in the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. At SEDS-Canada, she aims to cultivate strong/sustainable partnerships and relationships to help bring space & educational resources more accessible to other students!

Vanessa Van Decker is a Mechanical Engineering Student Specializing in Mechatronics at Ryerson University. She is a proponent for all things robotics, with experience in medical, space, and education applications. Vanessa developed cardiac catheter robots as an undergraduate research assistant. She is the Rover Chassis lead on Ryerson Rams Robotics, and works teaching robotics and coding to kids. Vanessa is continually organizing events for Ryerson University and Ryerson Rams Robotics as the founder of their Media and Outreach sub-team; drawing on her experience as an organizer for TEDxBrentwoodCollegeSchool, and TEDxAlgonquinPark. Vanessa plans workshops, leads a representation in robotics series, and liaises between organizations to help coordinate events within her university. As Events Chair, Vanessa will navigate the changing environment during Covid and further educational and experiential opportunities for students in the space sector. She plans to promote diversity, hands-on experience, and connection between students and professionals during her term. Vanessa is passionate about Space Robotics with an interest in working in that field.

Michelle is a first year student in the Engineering Science program at the University of Toronto. She hopes to specialize in Aerospace Engineering, and is interested in space, physics, and engineering design. Illustration and design have always been passions of hers, and she enjoys opportunities that allow her to combine her personal hobbies with professional endeavours. She hopes to one day contribute to the growing aerospace and space exploration industry!

image of Marie-Chloé Michaud Paradis

Marie-Chloé graduated from the Université de Montréal with a Bachelor in Chemistry and is beginning a Master’s in Chemistry at the same institution. For her thesis, she works on the applications of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to battery materials. She completed many research and industrial internships, namely at Johnson Matthey Battery Material (Candiac, QC) and ELEMISSION (St-Laurent, QC). During the latest, she learned how to apply artificial intelligence algorithms to LIBS data. The LIBS technology is found on both ChemCam and SuperCam and is thus a crucial sensor onboard Mars land rovers. With great enthusiasm, she developed a high interest in artificial intelligence applied to space exploration with applications such as high-throughput data analysis for target acquisition of self-guidance systems and data encoding. Marie-Chloé organized a few career events for the Université de Montréal Chemistry Department Student Association and helped fund the university food bank. During her free time, she works on comic book drawing and inking.
