Six teams successfully complete SEDS-Canada’s 2021 Young Space Entrepreneurs (YSpacE) competition.
Toronto, ON: Six student teams made up of students from across Canada have completed the Young Space Entrepreneurs (YSpacE) Competition, hosted by the Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS-Canada). YSpacE is Canada’s only business plan competition for students with a focus on the space sector. SEDS-Canada aims to empower students with the experience and confidence to target problems in the space sector, develop solutions, and turn them into profitable ideas. YSpacE accomplishes this by providing opportunities to develop a thorough business plan for an idea for a product or service while learning from experts through webinars & mentorship to refine their plans.
The YSpacE Pitch Competition Finals were held on February 28th during Ascension 2021. Six teams made up of 17 students pitched their ideas to a panel of judges, including Ryan Anderson (SatCan), Annie Martin (Canadian Space Agency), Daniel Schulten (MDA), and Matthew Tweedy (Creative Destruction Labs).
We’re happy to announce the winning teams are:
- First Place Prize, sponsored by MDA: Keel Scruton, Alex Leak, and Sean Clarke (all McGill University) from BioARC
- Second Place Prize, sponsored by SatCan: Anna Olesen (University of Calgary) and Joseph De Luca (University of New Brunswick) from Tridacna
- Third Place Prize, sponsored by Mosaic Creativity and Innovation Hub: Kaitlyn Lee (University of Waterloo), Charles Sirois (Polytechnique Montreal), and Kuthan Celebi (University of British Columbia) from Port-L
All six students teams join a growing class of YSpacE alumni which include young Canadian space startups like Obruta. Updates from alumni teams are posted on our YSpacE webpage.
