Meet your selected CAN-LAX Participants!

We received quite a handful of applications from all over Canada for the 2019 Canadian Lunar Analogue Experience (CAN-LAX). After interviewing top candidates, we’re delighted to introduce you to our selected participants. These students will partake in online training prior to being flown to Western University to participate in the #CanMoon mission.

Follow their journey’s on the @sedscanada Twitter account!

Meet the selected CAN-LAX participants:

Odysseas Vlachopoulos

University of New Brunswick

Odysseas Vlachopoulos is a PhD Candidate in UNB and a space enthusiast with a profound interest in space exploration. His background is Electronics and Computer Engineering. After his initial degrees and some years of engagement in real production, he focused on space and Earth observation engineering with Remote Sensing, both in academic and entrepreneurial environments. He has been honored with two awards by ESA and he is a member of the European Low Gravity Research Association (ELGRA). He has a passion for outdoor activities from sailing to mountaineering and, of course, spacefaring wearing his favorite spacesuit. With Greek roots, he is naturally interested in culture and philosophy, striving to inculcate in everyday life the oldest saying: If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.

Kieran Ratcliffe

McGill University

Kieran Ratcliffe is a Master’s of Engineering student in mechanical engineering at McGill University. In his spare time, Kieran builds and tinkers with robots and writes guitar songs between watching as many historical and space documentaries on YouTube as possible.

Johanna Kollewyn

University of Alberta

Johanna has a Bachelor’s of Engineering in aerospace engineering and is pursuing a Master’s in mechanical engineering when she’s not working as a transportation engineer. In her spare time, Johanna enjoys playing soccer and lacrosse, stargazing and doing front flips out of planes.

Shozab Ahmed

McMaster University

Shozab was born in Siegen, Germany and was raised in Sudbury, Ontario. He completed a Bachelors in Biomedical Biology from Laurentian University in 2018, and is currently finishing up a Master’s in Global Health at McMaster University. Shozab will attend the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at Western University for Medicine this fall. He aims to one day write and analyze space health policy while practicing as a physician in rural and remote regions of Canada (and around the world). Shozab hopes to follow in the footsteps of the great Canadian astronauts Dr. Roberta Bondar and Col. Chris Hadfield. A fun fact about Shozab: he has traveled to over 10 different countries in the past five years.

Stephen Pilar

University of Western Ontario

Stephen just finished his Bachelor’s at Western University with a major in Chemistry and a minor in Geology. In September he will be starting his Master’s in Geology also at Western U. In his spare time he likes to play sports and hike to stay active, and also enjoys reading and tinkering with anything from bikes to computers to learn how they work. Stephen is an avid tech enthusiast, but would probably be just as happy living in a cabin in the middle of the woods.
